Renewed Mind Therapy Intensives, Brainspotting & Counseling Wisconsin
Therapy for the Person Who Looks Fine on the Outside — But Knows Something Needs to Change.
Feel better. Think clearer. Get unstuck.
You’ve probably spent a long time figuring things out on your own.
You’re capable. Self-aware. Responsible. Maybe even the person everyone else turns to when things get hard.
But anxiety, intrusive thoughts, trauma, burnout, chronic stress, or emotional overwhelm can make even the strongest person feel stuck.
At Renewed Mind Therapy, therapy goes beyond simply talking about what’s wrong.
We work together to understand what’s keeping you stuck — and help you create meaningful change.

YOU’RE NOT ALONE
You know you’re functioning.
You just don’t feel like yourself.
Maybe you’ve become really good at holding it together.
You get things done.
You show up.
You take care of everyone else.
You may even look successful from the outside.
But internally, it can feel very different.
You overthink conversations, decisions, and what might happen next.
Your nervous system feels like it’s always “on.”
You’re exhausted, but you have trouble slowing down.
You understand your patterns intellectually — but still can’t seem to change them.
Anxiety keeps pulling you into worst-case scenarios.
Intrusive thoughts are demanding more attention than you want to give them.
Something from your past still seems to affect your present.
You feel disconnected from yourself, your body, or the people you love.
Stress, pain, trauma, or burnout has changed the way you move through life.
You’re tired of being told to “just think differently.”
Maybe you’ve tried therapy before — and you’re looking for something that goes deeper.
You don’t need to be falling apart to deserve support.
You just need to know that the way you’re living right now isn’t working anymore.
SOMETHING DIFFERENT
What if therapy didn’t have to mean talking about the same problem every week?
You can understand why you feel anxious and still feel anxious.
You can know your triggers and still get triggered.
You can know you need to slow down and still feel like your brain won’t shut off.
You can understand your past and still feel like your body is reacting to it in the present.
That’s where therapy can go deeper.
At Renewed Mind Therapy, we use evidence-informed approaches alongside Brainspotting and body-aware strategies to help you work with the patterns happening in your thoughts, emotions, nervous system, and behavior.
Because insight is powerful.
But insight + practice + processing can create change.
ABOUT ATHENA
I believe therapy should help you understand yourself — not make you feel like there’s something wrong with you.
I’m Athena Kjell, MS, NCC, LPC, SAC, and the founder of Renewed Mind Therapy.
I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor in Wisconsin, Texas, and South Carolina, a National Certified Counselor and Wisconsin Substance Abuse Counselor. I hold a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Mount Mary University and have been working in behavioral health for more than a decade.
My clinical experience includes work in private practice, corporate behavioral health, residential mental health treatment, partial hospitalization, anxiety and OCD treatment, substance use treatment, and telehealth.
I’ve worked with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma and PTSD, addiction and substance use concerns, and other challenges that can make everyday life feel harder than it should.
My approach is collaborative, practical, compassionate, and individualized.
I don’t believe you need to fit yourself into one diagnosis, one treatment model, or one version of what therapy is supposed to look like.
You are a whole person.
And your therapy should account for the whole picture.
CREDIBILITY / EXPERIENCE
Experienced. Specialized. Always Learning.
Your therapist matters.
Not because a long list of credentials guarantees the right fit — but because you deserve someone with the training and experience to understand what you’re bringing into the room.
Athena holds:
Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Trauma Counseling Certificate
National Certified Counselor (NCC)
Licensed Professional Counselor — Wisconsin
Licensed Professional Counselor — Texas
Licensed Professional Counselor — South Carolina
Wisconsin Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC)
Brainspotting Certification
Aroma Freedom Technique Certification
Her continuing education includes specialized training in Brainspotting for Health & Sports Optimization, CBT for Chronic Pain, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), Prolonged Exposure Therapy for PTSD, Traumatic Brain Injury, military-related behavioral health, first responder treatment, maternal mental health, ADHD, chronic pain, nervous-system regulation, DBT, OCD, addiction, and trauma-informed care.
The goal isn’t to collect credentials.
It’s to keep developing the knowledge and tools needed to provide thoughtful, effective care.
OUTCOMES
Imagine what could change if you weren’t constantly fighting yourself.
What if you could…
Feel calmer without having to control everything.
Learn how to recognize what your nervous system is doing and respond differently instead of constantly living in fight-or-flight.
Get out of your head.
Reduce the grip of overthinking, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and mental loops.
Process what happened instead of continuing to live around it.
Trauma doesn’t always feel like a memory. Sometimes it shows up as a reaction, a relationship pattern, a body sensation, or a belief about yourself.
Therapy can help you work through what your mind and body are still carrying.
Trust yourself again.
Build greater self-awareness without turning every thought, feeling, or mistake into evidence that something is wrong with you.
Function without constantly running on empty.
Learn strategies for stress, burnout, sleep, emotional regulation, and sustainable performance.
Feel more like yourself.
Not a perfect version of yourself.
Just you — with more freedom, flexibility, and capacity for the life you actually want.
SPECIALTIES
Therapy for the things that keep following you around.
Anxiety & Overthinking
Your brain won’t shut off.
You’re constantly analyzing, anticipating, preparing, or second-guessing.
Therapy can help you understand the cycle of anxiety and develop healthier ways to respond to uncertainty, fear, and overwhelming thoughts.
Anxiety, Panic, OCD & Intrusive Thoughts
Intrusive thoughts can be disturbing precisely because they feel so unlike you.
OCD can turn uncertainty into an endless search for reassurance, certainty, or control.
With evidence-informed approaches such as exposure and response prevention (ERP), therapy can help you change your relationship with intrusive thoughts rather than continuing to organize your life around them.
Trauma & PTSD
Not every painful experience looks like traditional trauma.
Sometimes trauma shows up as hypervigilance, emotional reactivity, avoidance, shame, disconnection, difficulty trusting, or feeling like your body is always waiting for something to go wrong.
Trauma therapy can help you process what happened while building a greater sense of safety in the present.
Stress, Burnout & Emotional Overload
You don’t have to wait until you’re completely burned out to ask for help.
Therapy can help you recognize the patterns that keep you operating at maximum capacity — and develop healthier ways to manage stress, boundaries, expectations, and emotional demands.
Chronic Pain & Health-Related Stress
Pain isn’t “just in your head.”
But your brain, nervous system, emotions, attention, stress response, and body can influence how pain is experienced.
With specialized training in CBT for chronic pain and somatic approaches to pain treatment, therapy can help you develop additional tools for living with and responding to chronic pain.
Sleep & Insomnia
When your body is exhausted but your brain refuses to shut down, “just get more sleep” isn’t particularly helpful.
CBT-I-informed strategies can help address the thoughts, behaviors, routines, and patterns that keep insomnia going.
Depression, Grief & Life Transitions
Sometimes you aren’t looking for someone to “fix” you.
You need space to process what changed, what you’ve lost, and what comes next.
Therapy can provide both support and practical tools for moving forward.
Substance Use & Recovery
With Wisconsin Substance Abuse Counselor licensure and extensive experience in substance use treatment and co-occurring mental health concerns, therapy can address both the behavior and the underlying emotional patterns.
THERAPY APPROACHES
Therapy should fit the person — not the other way around.
There isn’t one therapy approach that works for everyone.
Your treatment plan may incorporate different evidence-informed approaches depending on your goals, concerns, history, and what is most likely to help.
Brainspotting
Go beyond talking about what happened.
Brainspotting is a brain-body therapy approach that can help access and process experiences that may feel difficult to reach through words alone.
Athena completed Brainspotting Phase 1, Phase 2 traininG, Brainspotting certification, and an additional specialized training in Brainspotting for Health & Sports Optimization.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and patterns.
It can be particularly useful for anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress, and other concerns where changing patterns can create meaningful improvements.
Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP is an evidence-based treatment approach commonly used for OCD.
Rather than helping you eliminate every uncomfortable thought or feeling, ERP helps you build the ability to experience uncertainty and discomfort without relying on compulsions or avoidance.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills
DBT skills can provide practical tools for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Athena has facilitated DBT skills groups and completed advanced DBT training.
Behavioral Activation
When depression or avoidance makes life smaller, behavioral activation focuses on rebuilding meaningful activity and momentum — even before motivation returns.
Trauma-Informed & Body-Aware Therapy
Trauma doesn’t only affect what you think.
It can affect how you experience your body, relationships, emotions, attention, sleep, and sense of safety.
Therapy can incorporate body-aware and nervous-system-informed strategies alongside traditional psychotherapy.
BRAINSPOTTING
When talking about it isn’t enough.
Sometimes you know exactly what you’re struggling with.
You can explain it.
You can analyze it.
You can tell the whole story.
And yet…
You still feel stuck.
That’s one reason Brainspotting has become an important part of Athena’s clinical work.
Brainspotting offers a different way of working with experiences that may be difficult to fully process through conversation alone.
It can be incorporated into therapy for trauma, anxiety, stress, emotional experiences, performance concerns, and other issues where you feel like you’ve reached the limits of simply thinking your way through the problem.
You don’t have to choose between understanding your experience and actually processing it.
Therapy can make room for both.
ONLINE THERAPY
Therapy that works with your life — not against it.
Your schedule is already full.
You shouldn’t have to spend an hour commuting to therapy, rearranging your entire day, or sitting in a waiting room just to get support.
Renewed Mind Therapy offers secure online therapy for clients located in Wisconsin provided you are physically located in the state where Athena is licensed at the time of your session.
Online therapy gives you the flexibility to meet from a private, confidential location that works for you.
Whether you’re at home, traveling within your state, or fitting therapy between work and family responsibilities, telehealth can make consistent care more accessible.

HOW THERAPY WORKS
Starting therapy doesn’t have to feel complicated.
1. Reach Out
Start by contacting Renewed Mind Therapy to share a little about what you’re looking for.
You don’t need to have the perfect explanation.
You don’t need to know exactly what kind of therapy you need.
That’s what the consultation is for.
2. Make Sure We’re a Good Fit
We’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, what you’re hoping will change, and whether Renewed Mind Therapy feels like the right fit for you.
Therapy works best when you feel comfortable, respected, and understood.
3. Create a Plan
Once we’ve established that we’re a good fit, we’ll identify your goals and determine which approaches make the most sense for your situation.
That may include traditional talk therapy, CBT, Behavioral Activation/ ACT, ERP, DBT and IFS - informed skills, Brainspotting, trauma-focused work, or a combination of approaches.
4. Start Doing the Work
Therapy isn’t about staying stuck in the past.
It’s about understanding what happened, changing the patterns that aren’t serving you, building new skills, and creating more freedom in the present.
You don’t have to figure everything out before you reach out.
You don’t need a diagnosis.
You don’t need to know exactly what to say.
And you don’t have to wait until things get worse.
If something inside you is saying, “I can’t keep doing this the same way,” that’s enough to start a conversation.
Let’s figure out what comes next.
